I have an old photograph showing my aunt and a friend (both nurses at CKH) with 3 injured men. Written on the back of the photograph are the words Postle and Roberts taken in grounds with some of the wounded / 1st Evacuees from Dunkirk.
Does anyone know if CKH took injured servicemen for the duration of WW2 or Dunkirk only? Ethel |

Yes, Ryhope general hospital was built for WW2 but Cherry Knowle Hospital was the Mental Hospital further up the drive from Ryhope General Hospital. It was a large, possibly Victorian style brick built hospital. As far as I am aware it is still there, although I haven't been able to find any reference to it.
Having said all that I have now found a site which shows photographs as well! Last edited by Ethel F; 25-02-2010 at 04:52 pm. Reason: Found further information. |

I think that the "temporary" hospital for soldiers was built on the land between Cherry Knowle and the old A19 [near the grammar school]. The buildings later were used as Ryhope Hospital and were not connected with Cherry Knowle.
