26th August 1914.
The BEF were being pushed back after the Battle of Mons which was the first encounter between the British and German armies of the great war. At Le Cateau it was decided to make a stand. http://www.1914-1918.net/bat2.htm Does anyone have a famly member who fought there? We have researched the story of a Scottish soldier who had an amazing adventure. To learn more click on David Cruikshank on our signature. Regards J&K

Dear John and Kathleen,
I served in the WRAC in the 1960's and will be marching at the Cenotaph this Rememberance Sunday as it is the 60th anniversary of the WRAC. I understand i am entitled to wear my grandad's war medals. My brother Frank recently passed these on to me. They are the 1914 Mons Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Commonly known it seems as 'pip, Squeak and Wilfred'! It would seem after some initial research that my grandad was in the battle of Mons, having been awarded the Mons Star, which has a bar with the date 5th August to 22nd November. My son is helping me with some further research as it seems my grandad was also mentioned in despatches. My son thinks my grandad was possibly in the BEF as his army number on his medal card is 500. I am now wondering if he was in the Le Cateau battle? His name was Thomas Patrick Clarke and he enlisted in to the Army Veterinary Corps. Have you any thoughts on this? Many thanks Jenny |
