Hello everyone.
Are the East Lea 'prefabs' still there?
My parents George & Georgina Lacey lived at number 26 from 1946 to 1949.
Kind regards
Graeme

Hello again Graham.
We were hoping someone living in Seaham would pick this up and offer a reply to your question. As far as we are aware the pre-fabs are no longer there. When we were living in Seaham we did'nt get over that way very often. Were they near the tin houses? Not sure what the street is called but you may remember. Perhaps some thoughtful resident might post a photo, there must be some about.
Regards
John & Kathleen

Prefabs were very important down here in Portsmouth after the war. Having been badly damaged by bombing, there was a great need for new housing and prefabs met that need. They were enormously popular, being a great improvement over some of the housing people were in before and during the war. A number of my rellies down here were in them; one couple, a great aunt and uncle lived in theirs into the 1960s. Mum and Dad had one for a while in 1946 while Dad was in the reserve post war, until he rejoined the Border Regiment in Carlisle. I was too young to remember that, but later visited the great aunt and uncle in theirs while down on holiday.

There are no prefabs left in Seaham but the steel houses still exist and many are now privately owned

Not too good as I had to take them from car

Lucy, that was a kind thing to do. Thank you so much. If only everyone in the world was so helpful.
Kind regards
