I thought it would be helpful to list some of my family names and places (streets) from Seaham.
Names: Thirlwell, Walker, Curry, Tulip, Davison, Leighton, Baxter
Places: Henry Street, Back Henry Street, New Cottages, Ropery Walk, North Railway Street, Marlborough Street etc

This great site has already proved fruitful, providing a photo of a gr uncle that we had not seen, and a couple of places. Also more information on a family connection.

Hi Keith,
the links are:
Edward Thirlwell married Ann Walker 1844 St Mary the Virgin. He was my first Thirlwell (gr gr grandfather) in Seaham Harbour having "migrated" from Northumberland

Margaret Ann Thirlwell, daughter of the above, married John Baxter 1872. He was from Yorkshire, but they lived in Seaham Harbour where their children were born

Edward Thirlwell, grandson of Edward & Ann, married Dorothy Tulip 1903 in Herrington, but moved back to Seaham Harbour, running the Noah's Ark Inn for a while

John William Thirlwell, grandson of Edward & Ann, married Margaret Leighton 1916. She was the daughter of John & Margaret Leighton

Hi Ian, I recently had contact with Peter Baxter on this site. I went to school with hs sister Marie. Any connection?.......It sure makes the world seem very small. I also found two nephews I had not had contact with for over 40 years and we have caught up with each others families. It can only get better!!!!

I am from one of the Walker family's. Michael and Ann Walker had a son John born in Lamesley in 1795 who married Ann Hutchinson born in Penshaw in 1800 and between 1832 and 1835 they moved to Seaham because their seventh child was born here. They had 12 children altogether, the last six being born in Seaham and through one of these children I am a 4th cousin to IanT.

Hi Eileen,
mr gr gr aunt Margaret Ann Thirlwell married John Baxter in 1872 and I have some of their children listed, all born in Seahan Harbour. I have only traced one of the lines down, through another contact who is married to a gr grandson of Ann and John.

Eileen, sorry, I meant listed here at home on my PC. The Baxter family line I have starts in Yorkshire.
James Baxter married Dinah Wilson, both born around 1828
Their children:
Matthew 1850, John 1852, William 1860

It is John where my connection starts.
John Baxter married Margaret Ann Thirlwell (my gr gr aunt), 28th December 1872, Easington Register Office.
Their children, all born Seaham Harbour:
Dinah 1873, John William 1877, Anne Beatrice 1880, Ada 1882, James 1887, Bertha Jane 1890, Minnie 1892.

Ada married Wake Gibson and this line leads to my current contact in this family.

Hi Ian, I saw the photos and wondered if they might be the ancestors of my schoolfriend Marie. WE went to St. MAry Magdalene RC school in Vane Terrace and later to St. Anthony's Grammar school in Sunderland. She had a brother Neil older than her who hung out with my brother Bobby Kay. they lived in Ilchester St. Dawdon.

Cheers............:)

Joanna, my great uncle Edward Thirlwell, born 1877 Seaham Hbr, married Dorothy Tulip in 1903. Dorothy was the daughter of James Tulip and Hannah Walton. She was born 1884, Quarrington Hill. She and Edward married at Herrington, but moved to Seaham Hbr around 1904/1905.

Hi Ian

I am aware of James and Hannah Walton. My line goes from James' brother John (b1836). Are you aware that Hannah's sister, Ann married their brother William Friend?

Joanna

Hi Joanna, I didn't know about Hannah's sister as I haven't researched this line, and it's not clear to me, from the censuses, what her family is. I'm slightly confused about the reference to William Friend. Whose brother is he?

I was a bit slow realising William Friend was William Friend Tulip :o Now I have his 1843 birth registration in the GRO index. Oddly the Durhamrecordsonline site has an 1843 baptism for a John Friend Tulip, son of John and Martha.

Filling in some gaps in the family tree I have found the following surnames linked to me as cousins: Heckles, Duffy and Rutherford. There are several Seaham Harbour baptisms between 1920 and 1950, the children descended from my gr gr grandparents Edward Thirlwell and Ann Walker. A couple of the girls married into Creighton and Lavery.
