It is a fascinating website as my family all came from the North East, "Dormand" on my mother's side who lived at Seaham and "Edgar" on my father's side who lived at Ryhope and where I spent many summer holidays.

Hello Dave
The following is an extract from one of youe Seaton pages.

"I see there is no mention of Will Bulmer and his four sons. His father and grandfather before him farmed on Stotfield Farm and was the joiner and undertaker at Seaton. "

This paragraph is incorrect - Will Bulmer had 3 sons and 1 daughter & farmed at STOTFOLD farm. He was not the village joiner, that was H C Bulmer who was Will Bulmers cousin.
He was a joiner & wheelwright and not the village undertaker.

I am Will Bulmers oldest son.

This looks like an interesting site. My Seaham links are through the Elgey, Haswell and Scott families. My great grandfather was Joseph Elgey who set up a timber yard. Does anyone out there share my connections?

I am pleased that I have found this site, Through a relative of Tommy Cooper who showed me his and Susanna grave in Seaham. It made me feel proud that it has been kept in good condition. Some of my relatives, live in and surrounding area.
I am pleased that you have started this project. As keeping the past and leeting those that understand the Loca history of the home area. My interest is the tram and the trains of these local area. As I obtained a copy of the Local Tram and Railway map of 1897. As it was a Tram picture of 1908 of my Grandfather as the Driver.

So keep up the good work.

A new forum thread has been started entitled Seaham & the Great War Anthology Project. Please use it to post information on your family members who served in any way during WW1. If you have questions about family members please post it or e-mail us at; seahamww1@hotmail.com we may be able to help. We will see how it goes and may need to add sub-forums if there is sufficient interest.

IanT. We are working on the Thirwellsand will post on the forum thread.

A forum for this would be useful, Dave. If you want to avoid a plethora of fora then a single one for all military/armed forces would work I think, including Royal Navy and RAF. Otherwise you would need to decide how to split it.

Yes John, this discussion would be better in the forum, threads are very difficult to follow here in the guestbook which is only suitable for statements or simple question and answer posts.

Would you like a new category in the forum, WW1 and WW2, War, or similar, suggest a title.

Hello John and Kathleen. Thank you for such a speedy response. Joseph Tizard Snr was my geat grandfather and Joseph Jnr one of his ten children. Any informatIon would be really appreciated. All I know is that JT Snr served in Egypt. Regarding my grandmother Mary Tizard, I have a copy of her birth certificate (she was born Dec 1900) but this copy was issued 1 May 1915 and is endorsed "For War Purposes only" so presumably someone needed proof of age for her to travel to Gretna Green to work in the factory. I will try to get more information. Thank you so much that you are doing all this. Kind regards Graeme

Hi Graeme, I think we have 3 Lacey lads in the data-base but only with basic information about them. We also have some information on a Joseph Tizard jnr & Joseph Tizard snr. both who served if you are interested. We will check them out and post anything here for you. Your Grandmother also interests us as we are very keen to find out about women who did war work during the Great War. Kathleen's Grandmother also worked at Gretna. As far as we know there is only 1 woman commemorated on any Seaham War Memorial and she is Martha Hanah Beech of Melbury St in Dawdon. She was killed in an accident at a munitions factory in 1917 at only 18 years old. Can we appeal through this web-site for anyone with information about munitions workers to please get in touch. If we do not record their stories now they may be lost forever.
Dave (the Boss), should we be doing this on the Forum instead of the guest book. If so I will post a new topic there.
Regards
John & Kathleen

Reply to John and Kathleen. Thank you for the information about the Londonderry Roll of Honour. Perhaps you could also help with information about my paternal grandfather Ben Lacey 1890-1971 of Seaham Harbour who served in the First World War. I'm told he was a driver and eventually became a tank driver. I have no other information and his surviving children can't remember anything about his war service. If you come across him at all in your research I would really appreciate if you could let me know. My maternal grandmother, Mary Greaves (nee Tizard) 1900-1968 was a worker at the massive munitions factory at Gretna Green during WW1. Again I have no other information. Keep up the good work. Kind regards Graeme

Hello Lucy. Do you know David Fisher - he is my cousin and Robert and Joyce are his uncle and aunt. His Mum was Nora Lacey (Fisher) 1925- 1996. I wrote to David recently seeking info on our grandparents Ben and Nora.
Do you know the Lacey family in Seaham?
Do you remeber the Dawdon Hotel? My parents George and Jean Lacey ran the pub in the late 1950s.
Kind regards

Reply to Greame Lacy. The Londonderry Roll of honour as far as we are aware is not on public display. There used tobe a copy in St Hild & St Helens church but some nice fellow took it away to restore it. It must be a big job as he has'nt returned it yet. There is a copy in Durham Records Office. If you need a look up for a name let us know as we have a paper and scanned copy.

Thank you for a wonderful website. I am researching family history in the Seaham area. My father's family are from Seaham he was born and lived in Brough Avenue, Seaham. My father was Derek Coates b 1932. The family names I am researching are Coates and Dunn. My grandfather's name was John Knox Coates and he was a colliery worker but also heavily involved in the Territotial Army and served in Ceylon during WWII, If anyone has any information on these families I would be most grateful.

My family has strong connections with Ryhope and Sunderland on one side, while my wife's family has strong links with Sunderland and Seaham. The family name of Bacon is the key one in Seaham, though I've followed many other links in building a family tree. One result has been a contact in Canada who has strong links with Seaham and Easington.
