Loved the 'Up the ladder' article - my great aunt came to Dawdon and married in 1918 - had three kids - as much as I can make out. She was widowed quite early and remarried moving to a place called Marlborough Seaham. Know nothing at all about her other than she was called Annie - but I doubt the Annie in the article. The information helped bring it all to life. She would have been about the same age as the lady who wrote the article.

Would love to know if she knew my Annie.

Jq

Thank you.

What a fascinating and important visual/historic archive for Seaham. Hats off to the people who co-ordinate all of this work. Astonishing how quickly the town grew. An absorbing site to browse not only for Seaham natives, but 'incomers' interested in learning about the town's history.

A few weeks ago my wife and I took a trip to Northeast England. After talking to Brain on this site I found information about my family, and he then offered to take me around the area when I came to visit. My wife and I were overwhelmingly gracious at the generosity and knowledge that Brain was able to provide us on our trip. He took us to from the train station to Willington to look at some places were my family lived. Then he set up for two churches to be opened up for viewing for us. Brain then invited us into his home, to relax for a little while. We were extremely gracious to Brain and his wife for opening up their home to us. Brain also provided me with a map of Seaham, along with a CD with various information on BMD’s in the area. Anyone who is going to the Seaham area, I would recommend talking with Brain about the area. He is very helpful and very friendly.

Once again my wife and I would like to thank Brain for his generosity and time while we made our trip. I would be happy to talk with anyone personally about the experiences we had if you want to know anything further.

Thanks, Nick and Stephanie Watson

I am with Jock Copeland on this one - I remember the bridge in the 60s. I also remember coming back from one of the Seaham Boys matches (they had a very good team then) and the bridge was moving from side to side at a fair pace.

On putting your query into the forum this is one of the replies

( The info I have is that the road across the dene was built in 1959 and the bridge closed at that point.

I have three dates for demolition of bridge, 1961 (which would appear to be wrong), 1967 and late 60s.)

I read that section, and stated in my earlier message I remember crossing it in 1967.
Thats why I am a little confused at the daet demolished being given as 1961.

I'm trying to find out what date the Dawdon swing bridge was demolished, I've searched various sites and seen dates from around 1959 onwards. I can remember crosing it to watch Seaham Boys play at the Green Drive in 1967. I'm somewhat confused.

The George Elmy Lifeboat Restoration
Last week we made good progress with the boat on two fronts.

The team at Seaham removed all rubbish from the deck and also removed the wheelhouse which had been added, the steel rudder along with four bungs and so drained out the water. It is now starting to look like a lifeboat, well done the Seaham team. This work is shown in the photographs.

We also had some good luck in finding a sister lifeboat on the Isle of Skye. after checking with friends on Skye to see if there were any parts we could use on the George Elmy, photographs were sent down to us and we decided that it was worth a trip up there, one to see our friends and two to strip off parts to use in Seaham. Our thanks go to Graham and Margaret and John and Effie Ann without whose help we would not have managed. We did have a good time both at the boat and the pub as can be seen in photographs. THANK YOU SKYE.

In the coming week we have a fundraiser at MITCHELLS at Westlea (Friday 17th July at 8pm, entry £1) and hope for a good turn out. Also we hope to be in Byron Place Shopping Centre on Thursday collecting names for our Petition of Support from the people of Seaham, please help.

Hi Dave.
Kathleen is a brilliant cook so I have had years of practice at washing dishes. I'm not a great cook myself but would be prepared to join your family business as a mince and dumpling taster. (I would also be happy to taste the rest of your delicious products at no extra cost to you.) Kathleen has said she will apply if you chuck in a few return tickets for the channel tunnel.
She said she will immediately introduce a few new products, Escargo patties would be brought in first quickly followed by Grenouille nibbles. (It's common knowledge that not enough local people eat snails and frogs). These new innovations could also lead to increasing your staff by employing "pond plodgers" who would seek out the best local source for raw ingredients.
Sorry Dave, it was just too tempting an opportunity for me to be a bit silly.
Angus products are the things I miss the most and we do treat ourselves EVERY time we come to Seaham.
Regards
John

Hello Norman.
You must have a lot of memories from your younger years in Seaham. How about posting something on the forum section. It's a very friendly community and we like as many people as possible to join in. It's very user friendly too. It would also be terrific if you have any photos of Seaham or Seaham people, they need not be very old. Our son thinks the 60s & 70s were the "olden days"
Can we also encourage EVERYONE to join in, that's the whole purpose of this excellent site. Get out there and rummage through your drawers for those photos and memories of the town and district. YOU can play an important part in the development of this site.
To the younger visitors to this site how about talking to your parents and granparents about Seaham and district. Ask about their life and times and get them to tell you who is pictured on those old photos. Them post it all on this site.
Best wishes to all.
John & Kathleen

Hello Lucy, Thanks for the 2 messages.
Regretably I do believe that was the Billy Black in the photograph and some little time ago I did hear that he may have died and this seems to confirm it.
So you are cousin to Serana Johnson; I did hear that she now lives in Ryhope.
I've moved from Seaham in 1958 and therefore my knowledge of Seaham and the people is somewhat sketchy.
I assume you may be of a similar age; did you attend Church St School?
I am in touch with Noreen Percy (as she was then) who lived in West St near the Viceroy St Infants School although she too moved from Seaham in the early 50's.
Regards. Norman.

She was working as manager of an old peoples complex in Norton Road Stockton some years ago but I think due to ill health she gave it up and then moved to another part of Stockton
