If Richard Thorpe reads this, we have a query in the Site that you may be able to get the answer too. I know that your Mom worked in Gallons Shop and I do believe she was there til it closed. The question is what year did it close I seem to think it was about 1968

For Dave Angus - thank you so much for that information about William Watson as it really does help. I never realised that Ellen Watson had a pawn shop or that William Watson had been a shipowner. The William Watson at 48 Church Street with wife, Sarah, and six children is, in fact, my 3 x great grandfather's eldest son who was also a pilot as on the same census 1861, William senior is living at 10 Bank Street, Sunderland with wife Ruth and children, Ellen and Thomas. On the 1851 census, William senior has already moved to Sunderland and is listed as a pilot living with wife, Ruth, and daughters Ruth (my g.g. grandmother) and Ellen. Although all the census returns give the young Ruth Watson's birthplace as Sunderland, her birth certificate states that she was born 17th November, 1837 at Seaham Harbour where her father, William Watson, is a pilot and the informant is Henry Smith, Surgeon of Seaham Harbour. The William Watson at Church Street is still a relative so thank you very much for that valuable information!
Kind regards, Joan Britton

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about my 3 x great grandfather, William Watson, who was supposedly one of the first pilots in Seaham Harbour around 1830 and was also, at one stage, harbourmaster. Have tried to log into the forum but it keeps telling me that I am getting the random question wrong! Can anyone help?
19 /July /2010----01 :36 :53 - Buckinghamshire

Our comments to you   Joan,if you were in the registration page for the forum and the question was a sum , did you type the answer in numbers if so go back in and type the answer in letters (not 10 but ten).
Re your query about William Watson, I can find no record of him as Harbourmaster at Seaham, he first appears in Church St in the 1851 census then in the Trade Directories in 1856 at (48) Church St. as a pilot and shipowner. He shared this house with his wife, 6 children and two other families.
Sometime between 1862 and 1864 he moved across the road to number 19 on the south side of Church St. and was listed as a shipowner and shipsmith, again he shared the house with two other families.
By 1865 and until 1879 he was listed as a shipowner living at 7 Marlborough St. There is no mention of him after 1879.
In 1873 (his daughter? who could only have been 20 years old) Miss Ellen Watson was listed as a pawnbroker at 48 Church Street.
Hope this helps
Dave Angus

I remember going to the Church Street Methodist Church dances when i was a girl with my Parents Bessie and Eric Pike. They had a lot of friends in the church and I wondered if any of them will read them. I know the church has gone now but I have photographs of the bus trips they used to have, many years ago. If you are researching your family history and feel that a historical map may be of use - contact Alan Godfrey maps of Consett tele 01207 583388. I contacted them today to try and buy reprints of old OS maps of Seaham but they are out of stock and they have no plans to reprint - they need a print run of at least 100.

Tried to post a message in The Forum but was unable to access it.

I have visited Seaham today.
A lady in a shop on the sea front gave me the web address.
I am really interested in the history of Seaham as my relatives come from there - my father was born in Seaham - his name was Dennis Brown - his mother was Mary " Molly" Brown and his Father was Robert.
I have looked at a picture on your site - GW 047 - I am sure that my gandmother is sitting at the end of the front row on the right. Can anyone confirm this for me please? Her name is Mary Brown.
I also think we have a family connection to Corbett Ross - GW067.
I hope to search out some material for the site!

Hi,
Trying to find baptism for my grandmother, Sarah Ann Gibson who was born about 1874 in Seaham Harbour. On the 1881 and 1891census she is down as the niece of Matthew and Isabella Jackson, so no real clues who her parents were other than she names William Gibson (a miner) as her father when she married in 1897. (In Dorset) I have already bought 2 birth certs, but fathers name has not been William. Any help would be so much appreciated. Very interesting site!

Riveting site - warmest congratulations to Dave Angus and all the contributors for such a detailed and descriptive documentary about Seaham. It is fascinating to look through the photographs and to recognise the fine old buildings, land marks and means of production long since demolished. The site vividly demonstrates what an industrious and creative town we had. It also nicely recognises the pride in the workforce, as it poses for its place in the history books. Finally, it is sobering to realise that some of the 'historic' pictures include shots of my first car!!
